Green Building Workshop with US AID Palestine

Alami, in partnership with M/s CHF (Corporate Housing Foundation), held a Green
Building workshop in Palestine-Ramallah, on October 18th, 2011. The workshop is
part of a new USAID funded program dedicated to the construction of basic
infrastructure for remote and vulnerable communities in the West Bank. The
program also promotes environmental stewardship, social responsibility, economic
prosperity and cultural conservation. The workshop was inaugurated by the
Minister of Local Government, Dr. Khaled Qawasmi.
Khatib & Alami Sustainable Building section focused on several key tasks,
including:
• Green building awareness program for local communities
• The public sector and the private sector
• Technical assistance to national, district and local government units
• The Engineering Association
• The Palestinian Authority
Part of K&A's agreement with USAID is to give a total of five green building workshops on topics jointly decided by LGUs and the Engineering Association. These one day workshops will be organized over the course of the project, targeting LGU engineers and Engineering Association members and serving as a platform for a dialogue about the environment and community education and awareness on green buildings.
K&A Sponsored “Experience GIS in the Cloud and on the Beach”- Zanzibar, Tanzania

The 6th
ESRI Eastern African GIS User Conference was held from 5-7 October on the Island
of Zanzibar, Tanzania. The theme was "Experience GIS in the Cloud and on the
Beach”. Represented by Safaa Issa, and for the first time in this African
region, Khatib & Alami (K&A) was one of the exhibitors and a Bronze sponsor of
this event. The conference was attended by over one hundred users from mainly
African countries (Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and Rwanda) in addition to
regional and international geospatial solution and service providers. This
gathering provided a great opportunity for K&A to share its GIS experience with
participants while acquiring knowledge about the status of GIS in East Africa
and establishing ties with potential future clients. It also represents the
first footstep toward expanding K&A’s business into these developing
territories.
UIA 2011 Tokyo – Tokyo, Japan

Alami (K&A) has successfully contributed to the Lebanese Order of Engineers and
Architects (OEA) group who went to the Architectural Exhibition in Tokyo, Japan.
The exhibition was held in parallel with the UIA 2011 Tokyo, the 24th World
Congress of Architecture (Union of International Architects) from the 25th of
September to the 1st of October 2011. This UIA event takes place once every
three years in one of the UIA member countries. The next one is in 2014 in
Durban, South Africa. This year, the Lebanese delegation’s mission was to let
international communities of architects learn more about Lebanese architects’
potential. For this purpose, K&A provided the Lebanese delegation with four
projects to display that best reflect K&A’s architectural milestones from the
last 10 years. The projects on display were the International College Elementary
School; Middle East Airlines Training Center; Clemenceau Medical Center &
Private Clinics; and Le Royal Hotel. K&A wishes to congratulate OEA for this
successful contribution to raising awareness of Lebanese talent and Lebanon's
representative, Mr. Barmaki, the UIA Secretary General.
Esri Middle East and Africa User Conference

Lebanon in collaboration with Khatib & Alami will be hosting the Esri Middle
East and Africa User Conference (MEAUC), to be held from November 1st until
November 3rd 2011 in Habtoor Convention Center & Spa in Beirut, Lebanon.
The event attracts between 500 to 600 GIS professionals and end users from
around the Middle East and Africa, and approximately 35 exhibitors ranging from
hardware vendors, GIS solution providers, to local government agencies all keen
on demonstrating their products and solutions.
Esri (Redlands, California, USA) will have a delegation headed by the president,
Mr. Jack Dangermond participating in the conference. This is the first time that
a major event for GIS has been offered here and will provide an ideal
opportunity for the Lebanese GIS community to highlight its achievements to the
rest of the region.
This event is both an opportunity and an important milestone in the history of
GIS in the region.

Alami takes part in Cityscape Abu Dhabi

April 17th till the 21st, 2011, Khatib & Alami participated in Cityscape Abu
Dhabi, Middle East’s largest gathering of real estate professionals, that was
held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre and under the patronage of HH
Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy
Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
Khatib & Alami diverse fields of expertise and capabilities were presented by a
team from UAE and Oman offices.
Project Management Conference 2011 in KSA

Alami was a key sponsor of the Project Management Conference 2011, the largest
gathering of project management experts in the Kingdom that was attended by a
big delegation of Deputy and Assistant Deputy Ministers, Chairman and CEOs of
many public and private organizations in addition to 300 registered
participants.
Organized by the Saudi Council of Engineers, the 3rd Project Management
Conference 2011was heldfrom April 16th till April 19th, 2011at the Four Seasons
Hotel in Riyadh under the Royal Patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy
Mosques King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz.
It was great opportunity for Khatib & Alami to share its international
management and engineering consultancy experience with the participants who
visited K&A booth and learned more about Khatib & Alami scope of projects and
services.

Alami was the Gold Sponsor of the Saudi-Lebanese Forum that took place on April
7 and 8, 2011 in Beirut under the patronage of the President of the Council of
Ministers of Lebanon and in the presence of Saudi and Lebanese businessmen from
private and public sectors.
The Saudi-Lebanese forum’s main objectives were to assess recent developments
and trends in Saudi and Lebanese economies, and highlight business and
investment opportunities available in both countries especially in industry,
commerce, real estate, tourism, and transport.

office was relocated to its new premises, which can accommodate up to 200
employees, at the prestigious Infinity tower in the Mohandseen area.
The official inauguration was held in the presence of Mr. Samir Khatib from
Beirut office, Mr. Mohammed Sadyyiah from Sharjah office and Mr. Nabil Saleh and
Mr. Tarek Abdel Azim from KA-ASA office. Activities of the day included board
meetings of KA-ASA and K & A Consultants.

Smart Grid Solution Seminar

Alami (K&A) and Telvent conducted a one-day seminar at the Intercontinental
Muscat Hotel (Oman), revolving around the latest Smart Grid Solution (SGS)
developed by Telvent. Khatib & Alami and Telvent launched the seminar with an
overview of their respective companies, with the aim of showcasing their
industry-related profile and their long-established expertise in serving
utilities in the Middle East and worldwide.
The SGS Seminar was attended by Mr. Manuel Galnares González de la Madrid
(Commercial Director - Electric Business) and Miss MirnaGalic (DMS Engineer)
from Telvent side; Mr. Khattar Attasi (Resident Manager in Oman), Mr. Bilal A.
Hassan (Manager of Utility Solutions Department) and Mr. SafaaIssa (Manager of
Operations Management Section) from K&A side. Also present, were key managers,
engineers and decision-makers from Muscat utilities, represented by Muscat,
Mazoon and Majan Electric Distribution companies and the AMI (Advanced Metering
Infrastructure) project director at the Oman Electricity Holding Company (EHC).
Other attendees included Operations Manager of Kharafi National, a leading
infrastructure Project Developer in water, waste water and waste management.
The seminar focused mainly on the powerful integration that was developed
between three Telvent solutions, namely, the Smart Metering system, the Smart
Operation system and the Smart Network management system, which make up the
Telvent’s Smart Grid Solution suite. An overview of each of these solutions was
offered in addition to two live demonstrations, the first exhibiting
Telvent’sOASyS SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) software and DMS
(Distribution Management System) and the second showcasing two of Telvent’s
Smart Metering technologies, namely the Titanium AMI Manager and the Conductor
Meter Data Management (MDM).
The Telvent Smart Grid Solution seminar held in Muscat was an important event
for utilities and consultants /contractors servicing these utilities in the
Middle East. The major advancement embodied by the new Smart Grid Solution
represents undoubtedly a milestone in the software industry, as utilities in the
Middle East are fiercely and relentlessly looking for better and more efficient
ways to manage their companies amidst the looming threat of decreasing energy
reserves being faced worldwide.

First GIS Day
in Erbil

The
Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Department of IT (DoIT) has successfully
conducted, for the first time, the 2010 GIS Day in collaboration with Khatib &
Alami (K&A) and Esri Lebanon (EL).The event took place at the IT Academy in
Erbil and was attended by ministers, professors, director generals, foreign
consulates, IT experts and GIS users. Over 170 persons gathered to share
experiences and learn about the unlimited uses of GIS and how KRG can achieve
its strategic goals by utilizing the power of GIS.
On the first day, Head of KRG Department of IT (DoIT), Mr. Botan Mahmoud Osman
delivered a welcome speech highlighting the role of DoIT in supporting IT/GIS
developments. During the ceremony, Dr. Najib Khatib, Director General of Khatib
& Alami, made a brief history on GIS Day and highlighted K&A’s long standing
commitment in delivering Esri state-of-the-art GIS solutions throughout the
Middle East, North Africa and the Gulf Region. A presentation about GIS, its use
in different verticals, and the Esri latest technology followed.
The GIS day also featured live demos on ArcGIS 10, technical tracks and training
sessions along several demos of K&A projects in the region.

Alami Takes Part in Wastewater Egypt 2010 Summit

Alami attended Waste Water Egypt 2010 Summit held in Cairo on November 1st and
2nd, 2010. K&A was represented by the Head of Water and Environmental
Department, Dr. Adel Abou Jaoude and Environmental Department Deputy Manager
Eng. Maher Habanjar from Beirut Office, and Design Manager of Infrastructure
Section, Eng. Morad Kamel, and Environmental Section Manager, Eng. Ranya Zidan
from Cairo office. K&A presentation caught the eye of summit delegates and
visitors and was a good opportunity to introduce K&A experience in environmental
projects to the Egyptian market.

event in the region which features a comprehensive series of development
showcases and establishes a platform for leading real estate developers,
designers, architects and contractors to discuss finding new ways to design and
develop sustainable building.
Sustainability Value Creation Fosters a New Culture

Alami launched “Sustainability Value Creation at K&A”, a plan to adopt
sustainability principles in the Company, addressing the physical premises and
activities, as well as, the services K&A provides to its clients. The launching
of this project took place in a seminar on sustainability attended by over
400Khatib & Alami employees at Bristol Hotel in Beirut. The program included an
introductory speech by Dr. Najib El-Khatib, the viewing of Al Gore’s film on
global warming, followed by a presentation by Mrs. Rima El-Khatib Hervouet on
the plan for K&A, and a presentation on paper recycling, an introduction of the
Lebanese Green Building Council, and finally a sustainable design lecture by Eco
Consulting.
Sustainability Value Creation aims at creating a cleaner indoor environment and
reducing our energy, water and resource consumption, as well as, its generated
waste. These actions will lower CO2 emissions and hence contribute to fight
global warming. From a design point of view, K&A commits to providing its
clients with the most ecologically sound and sustainable projects as part of its
standard services.
