Celebrated worldwide, GIS Day 2006 was also marked in Lebanon on November
15, 2006. K&A, being one of the pioneers that have spread GIS as a
breaking-through technology ever since its birth more than a decade ago,
celebrated GIS in that day as now customary in the firm’s tradition.
Under
the patronage of the H.E. Fouad
Saniora, the Lebanese Prime Minister, K&A hosted
a forum titled
“GIS in Humanitarian Services” at the Movenpick
Hotel in Beirut. The event hosted around 200 experts who were mainly related
to governmental organizations, local and international non-governmental
organizations, the private sector as well as academia.
In 4 hours, the audience shared integral knowledge, technology and model
projects, where the event included presentations from representatives of key
entities that are active in the humanitarian field. The lectures were
divided into two major sessions, and included the following topics: “Using
GIS for Demining” (by Mine Action Coordination
Centre), “Using GIS for Supporting Field Logistics” (by UNJLC), “Using GIS
for Emergency Response” (by Lebanese Red Cross), “Using GIS for Mapping
Displaced Population” (by Ministry of Health), “Spatially Enabled Electronic
Decision Support System for Damage Assessment and Economic Restoration” (ArabiaGIS
and seeCOSM). K&A’s
presentation was titled “Using GIS for War Damage Assessment”, presented by
Manal El Sayyed.
