Al-Jadriya Bridge

Designing a new Tigris crossing within Baghdad’s busy riverfront.

Khatib & Alami (K&A) designed the Al-Jadriya Bridge as part of the Abu Nuwas Road Expansion Project in Baghdad, Iraq. The 520 m crossing links Al-Rusafa and Al-Karkh within a wider 7.7 km transport corridor.

The scheme connects Abu Nuwas Road with Al-Qadisiyah Expressway and Al-Nusour Square, incorporating two elevated viaducts and grade-separated connections to distribute traffic through the surrounding road network.

A river crossing within a constrained urban setting

Heavy traffic, limited right-of-way and continuous public activity along the waterfront shape the project’s design and construction approach. Maintaining access during the works is essential for residents, businesses and people traveling through the area.

Within the Tigris, river flows, navigation and environmentally sensitive areas create additional design constraints.

K&A designed a box-girder structural system with spans of up to 85 m. Fewer supports within the river limit interference with water flows and navigation, helping protect the river environment while accommodating its continued use.

Coordinating structural design, traffic planning and construction sequencing supports efficient delivery within the available space. Temporary diversions and phased structural works help keep routes open, reducing disruption to daily journeys and access to nearby destinations.

Improving connections across Baghdad

The wider corridor is expected to reduce peak-hour travel times by approximately 20–35% and increase cross-river capacity. For daily road users, these improvements are expected to shorten journeys to workplaces, universities, commercial districts and public services, while easing pressure on existing crossings.

The project also complements the revitalization of the historic Abu Nuwas waterfront, including upgraded public spaces and an enhanced riverside promenade. Together, these improvements support the waterfront’s role as both a transport connection and a place for people to spend time by the Tigris.
