ABC Verdun: Open mall becoming a green lung for the city
ABC Verdun Mall in Beirut is Lebanon’s first LEED-certified community mall, located in one of the city’s most dynamic districts. Designed with sustainable architecture and integrated green spaces, the mall blends Mediterranean openness with a strong community focus.
The open mall concept connects indoor and outdoor spaces, linking directly to surrounding residential neighborhoods. Covering 110,000 m², it includes a 10,000 m² anchor department store, 6,000 m² of entertainment areas, 11 cinemas, a family zone, 1,800 m² of landscaped gardens, and a lively al fresco courtyard. The result is a multifunctional, sustainable urban park that redefines retail as a destination for shopping, leisure, and relaxation.
K&A provided the architectural design, sustainability strategies, and full construction supervision, ensuring a project that met international standards and local community needs.
ABC Verdun Mall: Building in a Dense Urban District
The site is located in one of Beirut’s busiest neighborhoods, surrounded by roads and high-rise buildings. This created severe logistical and construction challenges. Moreover, we had to complete the project on a fast-track 28.5-month schedule while maintaining strict sustainability and quality goals. Coordinating 63 subcontractors and over 150 specialists added further complexity.

Structural and Logistics Innovation
Precast concrete elements replaced conventional slabs, which significantly reduced on-site labor, enhanced safety, and optimized costs. Additionally, our experts implemented a comprehensive logistics plan to effectively manage the delivery and installation of precast components. This careful planning helped alleviate traffic in the congested area, ensuring a smoother operation overall.
Lean Construction and Digital Tools
For the ABC Verdun Mall project, we implemented lean construction principles—a first in Lebanon—to improve planning and team coordination. Furthermore, Building Information Modeling (BIM) utilizing REVIT software enabled clash detection and integration, marking a national first in digital delivery.
LEED-Certified Retail Mall in Beirut
Moreover, the mall achieved LEED BD+C certification through measures such as LED lighting, solar photovoltaic systems, durable materials, and an advanced waste management program.
Project Impact and Achievements at ABC Verdun Mall
We delivered ABC Verdun Mall on time, and it has become a landmark for sustainable retail in Beirut. As a result, the project created over 2,000 jobs, attracted new investments, and introduced a vital green lung that improves urban air quality and community well-being.
The project also received the ENR Global Best Project Award in the Retail/Mixed-Use category in 2018, setting a benchmark for environmentally responsible and socially impactful design in Lebanon.
