Abu Flous Desalination Plant: Delivering Reliable Water for Basra

The Abu Flous Desalination Plant is located in the Basra Governorate of southern Iraq. It aims to provide a dependable source of drinking water. This facility is designed to support local communities in need of a reliable water supply. As one of the largest water treatment projects in the region, the plant not only enhances resilience in Basra but also addresses critical issues related to water scarcity. With a production capacity of 72,000 cubic meters per day, it effectively tackles the challenges of variable water quality and the increasing demand for water.

Furthermore, K&A provided comprehensive design services for the project, which included consulting engineering, detailed design, and the preparation of tender documents. In addition to these services, the project also benefits from our expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), master planning, sustainability consultancy, and water infrastructure engineering. Consequently, this collaborative approach ensures long-term resilience and efficiency for the community.

Tackling Variable Water Quality at the Abu Flous Desalination Plant

Raw water sources from Shat Al Arab and the Irwaiyah Canal present major challenges, with Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) ranging from 2,000 to 35,000 ppm, as well as fluctuating pollutants and turbidity. The Basra desalination plant, therefore, sets a standard for adaptive treatment in the region. To achieve consistent results, the plant needed a robust treatment process that could effectively adjust to extreme variations in the input water. As a result, it has become a benchmark for other facilities looking to enhance their adaptability and performance.

Engineering Adaptive Solutions for Sustainable Water Supply in Basra

This K&A desalination project integrates automation, advanced sensors, and scalable design to ensure continuity. We designed the plant with flexible and intelligent systems, including:

  • Adaptive treatment technologies that adjust in real time to water quality changes
  • Advanced sensors and automation to optimize efficiency and maintain standards
  • Extensive pre-treatment systems to stabilize water input before desalination
  • A treated water storage tank of 17,000 m³ to ensure supply reliability
  • An emergency power supply station to guarantee continuous operation

Ensuring Reliable Drinking Water Supply in Basra

How the Abu Flous Desalination Plant Ensures Consistent Performance

The Abu Flous Desalination Plant project will deliver a secure, high-quality water supply for the Abu Flous area. For communities depending on reliable drinking water in Basra, the plant guarantees safety and resilience.

  • Reliability: Adaptive systems ensure uninterrupted access to potable water
  • Consistency: Treated water meets standards despite raw water fluctuations
  • Efficiency: Large storage capacity and optimized processes support demand peaks and maintenance cycles
  • Resilience: The design strengthens local water infrastructure, reducing vulnerability to environmental and seasonal challenges

Moreover, the plant sets a benchmark for water security in Iraq’s southern region, ensuring resilience and a reliable supply for the Abu Flous community. It also stands as a model of sustainable water supply in Basra, designed to adapt to future demand and environmental change.
