Bahrain International Airport: Ensuring Continuity Through Feasibility Study

Transportation | Airports | Muharraq, Bahrain

The Bahrain International Airport feasibility study project positions K&A at the heart of Bahrain’s aviation development, reinforcing the airport’s resilience and capacity to serve passengers without disruption.

Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) commissioned K&A to evaluate the use of Bahrain International Airport’s emergency runway. The study ensures safe and uninterrupted operations while the main runway undergoes refurbishment.

Evaluating the Emergency Runway

The feasibility study assesses all factors needed to confirm the safe operation of the airport’s secondary runway. The scope covers:

  • Weather and visibility analysis
  • Runway length evaluation
  • Airspace procedures and capacity studies
  • Ground operations planning
  • Safety assessments in line with international aviation codes
  • Identification of required infrastructure upgrades

This comprehensive approach ensures the emergency runway can meet operational demands while maintaining the highest safety standards.

“A big challenge in our current project is the short time we have to finish it, along with the large amount of data needed for a proper analysis. Our goal is to find the best solutions that help BAC, airline companies, and passengers, while also dealing with site limits and following international aviation rules and standards.” Director – Airports (Global), Dr. Rabih El Khatib.

To overcome these challenges and deliver the highest quality of work to BAC, K&A’s approach involves leveraging a pool of resources, sound expertise, and insights gained from previous projects.

Applying Innovation and Precision

K&A’s methodology emphasizes rigorous analysis and digital integration. In fact, project milestones were closely managed to maintain quality, while digital solutions were explored to enhance efficiency and collaboration. As a result, the team adapted quickly, navigated site constraints, and aligned with international aviation codes.

Safeguarding Operations During Runway Refurbishment

The Bahrain International Airport feasibility study equips BAC with the insights needed to operate the emergency runway confidently during refurbishment works.

By ensuring continuity of services, the project supports passenger experience, airline operations, and the airport’s role as a regional hub. It sets the foundation for a safe, resilient, and future-ready airport environment in Bahrain.
