Basra Ring Road Project: International Road Network
The Basra Ring Road Project is a major international highway network designed to improve mobility across the Basra Governorate. The route connects key districts, water crossings, residential areas, and border points through a coordinated and strategic design.
K&A delivered the full design scope, including Design, Traffic Engineering, and Infrastructure Design, ensuring the project supports long-term mobility, environmental quality, and urban growth.
Strategic Role of the Basra Ring Road Project
The Basra Ring Road Project aligns with the updated Basra master plan and connects major access points across the city. The route begins near Basra Airport Road, intersects several regional roads, and crosses Shatt Al Arab twice through large-scale bridges.
The development includes green corridors that enhance environmental quality, reduce health risks, and provide a clean gateway into Basra.
Designing a Complex, Multi-Corridor Highway System
The project includes multiple water crossings, including two major Shatt Al Arab spans. These crossings required large-scale bridge engineering and environmental planning to ensure safety and structural resilience.
Supporting Urban Flow and Future Expansion
The road integrates intersections, highways, service roads, bus lanes, drainage systems, lighting, and pedestrian elements. It also provides access to educational, residential, and commercial zones, helping decentralize traffic from the city center.
Technical Delivery for the Basra Ring Road Project
K&A aligned the Basra Ring Road Project with Basra’s 2011 master plan and its 2013 amendments. The route includes bypass roads, land acquisitions, stormwater drainage, protection barriers, lighting, and traffic systems.
Enhancing Mobility, Safety, and Environmental Quality
Landscape Design introduced green spaces along the corridor, creating a cleaner environment for communities. Traffic management features—including signage, signals, and pedestrian crossings—support safer and more efficient movement.
A Connected, Sustainable, and High-Capacity Road Network
The completed highway network decentralizes traffic, reduces congestion in the city center, and improves connectivity between major districts. Enhanced bridges, protected infrastructure, and express bus lanes support a safer and more efficient transportation system.
The project strengthens Basra’s mobility framework and serves as a strategic asset for future urban planning and economic development.
