Expanding Doha’s Road Network: Phase 4 Bridges and Tunnels

Transportation | Bridges | Doha, Qatar

In preparation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Qatar invested heavily in infrastructure to ensure safe and efficient mobility. As part of this effort, the Ministry of Transport and Communications awarded K&A Packages 26 and 27 of Phase 4. The project aimed to upgrade Doha’s road network, test it under projected 2030 traffic conditions, and design solutions to improve mobility across the city.

K&A provided design services, covering concept design for roads, bridges, underpasses, and a cut-and-cover tunnel. This role also links to our broader expertise in structural engineering, design, and tunneling, reflecting the scale and complexity of the works.

Designing for Complexity and Scale

The project required the full concept design of 13 grade-separated junctions, 9 bridges, 5 underpasses, and a 4.5 km tunnel. Managing such an extensive network demanded precise planning and integration to ensure resilience and long-term performance.

The designs incorporated post-tensioned, multi-cell box-girder decks for bridge superstructures, supported by abutments and piers founded on reinforced concrete spread footings or pile caps. For curved and straight alignments, distinct pier designs were introduced to maintain safety, durability, and functionality.

Engineering Solutions for Urban Mobility

K&A’s designs addressed structural, geotechnical, and operational challenges by applying advanced engineering techniques. The integration of different road and bridge alignments required careful coordination to ensure smooth traffic flow and seamless connections.

By combining roadway design with bridge and tunnel engineering, the project created a coherent framework to accommodate both current and future demand.

Results: Strengthening Doha’s Transport Infrastructure

The Phase 4 Bridges Packages 26 & 27 project delivered comprehensive designs that modernized Qatar’s road network ahead of the FIFA World Cup. The infrastructure improved traffic conditions, resolved anticipated congestion, and facilitated easier access to stadiums and urban districts.

This project not only supported the global event but also laid the foundation for long-term urban mobility in Doha, ensuring the city’s transport network can withstand future growth and demand.
