Flood Protection for Asir Region: A Strategic Stormwater Master Plan
The Asir region of Saudi Arabia is defined by steep mountains and extensive wadis that make it vulnerable to flash floods. To address these risks, the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs & Housing (MoMRAH) / Amanah Asir commissioned K&A to develop a Strategic Stormwater Master Plan and Flood Protection program.
K&A’s scope included studies, design, and tender documents, linking to our broader expertise in studies and design services across water and environmental infrastructure. Covering more than 81,000 km², the project spans 33 municipalities and five sub-municipalities, making it one of the largest regional flood protection programs in the Kingdom.
Understanding Flood Risks in Complex Terrain
The Asir region’s varied topography creates challenging flood dynamics. High mountains channel rainfall into wadis, generating fast, destructive flows that threaten both urban and rural communities. Managing flood risk across such a vast area required a comprehensive approach supported by advanced hydrological and hydraulic modeling.
Technical and Strategic Solutions
K&A developed a master plan and mitigation strategy that addressed both immediate risks and long-term resilience:
- Hydrological analysis to understand water flow dynamics across the region
- Flood risk assessment to identify and prioritize critical hotspots
- 2D hydraulic modeling to support technical designs and planning
- Tailored mitigation strategies for urban and rural flood-prone areas
- Decision-making tools in the form of visual maps and scenario analyses projecting outcomes over the next three decades
