King Faisal Air Academy Airfield Works: Expanding Aviation Capacity

Transportation | Airports | Majmaa-Riyadh, KSA

The King Faisal Air Academy (KFAA) Airfield Works in Majmaa, Saudi Arabia, is a strategic aviation project aimed at strengthening the Kingdom’s air training and operational capabilities. This project was commissioned by the Nesma and Al Mabani/ATS Joint Venture (NAS JV). In this context, K&A served as the main consultant, reviewing and validating the design of Phase V works. Furthermore, K&A ensured complete compliance with international aviation standards throughout the process.

The scope included a 3,700-meter runway, a 530,000 m² apron, a helipad, a compass calibration pad, a ground run-up pad, and a comprehensive taxiway system. K&A also planned a 2,500-meter parallel runway with associated taxiways and apron. This supported simultaneous arrivals and departures alongside the primary runway.

Managing Complex Demands in a Fast-Track Framework

Our teams delivered the project under a Design & Build framework, requiring immediate consultation and decision-making to keep pace with construction. As a result, contractors often needed rapid validation and technical input outside regular working hours. Moreover, unforeseen client requests further added to the complexity, demanding flexibility and responsive problem-solving from the project team.

A Collaborative and Agile Approach

K&A tackled these challenges by implementing strong leadership and closely coordinating with the NAS JV team. Specifically, the Project Director and the Engineering Manager at K&A worked together to ensure that decisions were both timely and technically sound. Moreover, the design team actively participated in all technical meetings, enabling continuous involvement and the swift resolution of issues. Additionally, flexible work arrangements enabled the team to adapt to changing requirements without hindering progress.

Delivering a World-Class Airfield

The KFAA Airfield Works Phase V project was completed successfully, reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s aviation infrastructure and supporting the expansion of air training capacity. The integration of runways, aprons, taxiways, and specialized facilities met stringent safety and performance standards.

Through collaborative leadership, proactive problem-solving, and adaptability, K&A delivered a technically robust design that aligned seamlessly with construction, ensuring the project’s timely completion within a demanding framework.
