Kingdom National Schools Program: Structural Solutions for Fast-Track Education Facilities
The Kingdom National Schools Program – Phase 1 is part of a nationwide initiative to deliver high-quality and sustainable education infrastructure across Saudi Arabia. Commissioned by Wave One Project Company, the program required innovative structural solutions to meet demanding timelines and ensure consistent performance across multiple sites.
K&A acted as main consultant for design, with responsibilities spanning architectural and structural engineering. The total built-up area for Phase 1 reached nearly 310,000 m², delivered at a construction value of $346 million.
Structural Challenges in a Multi-Site Program
The project faced three key challenges. A compressed schedule demanded significant reductions in construction time. Stringent façade performance requirements called for compliance with U-Value and fire rating standards. Finally, varying ground levels across sites created obstacles to applying a uniform foundation strategy.
Innovative Structural Solutions
K&A adopted a precast structural system for the superstructure, dramatically accelerating construction. Precast sandwich load-bearing walls provided both structural stability and enhanced thermal and fire performance, addressing façade requirements without compromising speed. Foundations were standardized using engineered fill, enabling consistent embedment across sites and simplifying adaptation to diverse ground conditions.
Faster Delivery Through Precast Excellence
The Kingdom National Schools Program – Phase 1 achieved significant reductions in construction time while meeting strict safety and performance standards. The standardized structural approach enabled seamless adaptation across sites, thereby improving efficiency and consistency.
The use of precast and tilt-up panel systems expanded technical expertise, introduced new construction methodologies, and optimized details to reduce thermal bridging. The project demonstrated how innovative structural engineering can deliver speed, quality, and compliance — setting a benchmark for future educational infrastructure in Saudi Arabia.
