Light Rail Transit (LRT): Connecting Cairo to the New Capital
The Light Rail Transit (LRT) project in Egypt is a transformative transport initiative that will meet the demands of a rapidly expanding metropolis. Linking Line 3 of the Greater Cairo Metro at the Adly Mansour Hub Station to the New Administrative Capital, the LRT provides a fast, efficient, and sustainable alternative to road travel.
K&A was awarded the role of design review and construction supervision, ensuring quality and safety throughout delivery. This scope also aligns with our broader expertise in site supervision, supporting large-scale urban transport systems across the region.
Addressing Cairo’s Transport Challenges
Cairo’s rapid population growth and economic expansion outpaced the capacity of its existing infrastructure. Residents faced long commutes, worsening congestion, and environmental impacts. A direct, reliable connection to the New Capital was urgently needed to ease pressure on the city and improve quality of life.
Engineering a Reliable Transit System
The LRT project addresses these challenges directly. With a single-direction capacity of over 30,000 passengers per hour during peak times, it provides a robust and future-ready solution.
K&A’s role focused on detailed design review and construction supervision to ensure the system met international standards of safety, reliability, and efficiency. Our teams worked closely with stakeholders to deliver infrastructure capable of supporting Cairo’s long-term urban development.
A Faster, Smarter, and More Connected Cairo
The Cairo LRT project strengthens Egypt’s transport infrastructure while transforming mobility patterns across the Greater Cairo Region.
- Enhanced connectivity: Directly links Cairo with the New Administrative Capital and eastern districts, including Al-Salam, Al-Obour, Future, Badr, and El-Shorouk.
- Reduced congestion: Provides a fast alternative to road traffic, easing pressure on heavily used corridors.
- Improved accessibility: Residents can now reach the New Capital within one hour, reducing travel times significantly.
- Urban resilience: Supports Cairo’s shift toward a multicenter urban structure, improving long-term sustainability.
