Madinah MRT and BRT Integration: Advancing Urban Mobility

The Madinah Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line 1 and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Lines 1 and 2 project, combined with three new interchanges, represents a major step in enhancing urban mobility across the city. Spanning 73 kilometers, the project integrates metro, bus rapid transit, and road systems into a cohesive framework designed to reduce congestion and improve accessibility.

K&A, acting as a design subcontractor to the SYSTRA and Egis Rail Joint Venture (SEJV), delivered detailed design and tender documents for the interchanges and utility relocations. Our role ensured the infrastructure design was both technically robust and aligned with stakeholder requirements.

Designing for a Growing City

The project included a 32 km metro line from Madinah Airport to Miqat, two BRT lines covering 41 km, and three major interchanges along King Abdul Aziz Road. These upgrades required careful planning not only to address traffic flow but also to integrate with ongoing urban development and existing infrastructure.

K&A’s scope extended to the relocation of wet and dry utilities — water, sewer, stormwater, irrigation, power, telecom, and lighting — ensuring the transport systems could be delivered without disruption to essential city services.

Overcoming Complex Utility Challenges

The project’s location in dense urban corridors presented significant challenges. Utility networks overlapped with major streets, while concurrent large-scale projects created conflicts in design and execution. Critical infrastructure such as trunk sewers, water transmission lines, and high-voltage cables required careful evaluation.

K&A addressed these challenges through intensive stakeholder coordination, multiple workshops, and the development of alternative design scenarios. This approach ensured efficient relocation strategies and reduced risks during construction.

A Connected and Accessible Madinah

The Madinah MRT and BRT project has advanced the city’s transport infrastructure by linking metro, bus rapid transit, and road systems into one integrated network. The designs improved traffic safety, eased congestion, and enhanced accessibility to key destinations, including the airport, central districts, and major religious sites.

By combining technical precision with strong stakeholder engagement, K&A supported a project that strengthens Madinah’s role as a modern, connected, and accessible city.
