Maqta Bridge Expansion Abu Dhabi: Integrated Road and Bridge Design
The Maqta Bridge Expansion Abu Dhabi strengthens one of the city’s key transport corridors, supporting smoother traffic flow between Abu Dhabi Island and the mainland. As mobility needs continue to grow, the expanded bridge system improves safety, capacity, and continuity across a strategic 3 km road section.
K&A led the concept design, full design development, structural design, and end-to-end construction supervision. The project enhances the existing network with new road bridges, pedestrian crossings, and upgraded approaches designed for long-term performance and resilience.
Modernizing a Strategic Connection in Abu Dhabi
Craneburg Construction Company appointed K&A as the main consultant to deliver a coordinated design for two new road bridges measuring 150 m and 200 m, along with two symmetrical pedestrian bridges of approximately 40 m each.
The scope covers full road design, detailed structural engineering, and all supporting works, including alignments, embankments, clearances, foundation plans, deck and pier details, reinforcement, pre-stressing design, and comprehensive construction documentation.

Key Design Considerations and Project Needs
Ensuring Safe Road Geometry
The project required precise road alignment and profiles across the bridge spans and their approaches. Vertical and horizontal clearances had to be verified for both vehicles and pedestrians.
Integrated Structural Components
The team coordinated foundations, decks, bearings, piers, abutments, and wingwalls. This level of integration was essential to deliver a safe, efficient, and constructible bridge system.
Protection of Bridge Approaches
Embankment design and protection were crucial to maintaining stability and long-term performance at both ends of the bridges.

K&A developed a complete set of engineering and construction documents, including:
- Full road alignment, profiles, and setting-out plans.
- Retaining walls and mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) systems where required.
- Complete structural design packages covering foundations, decks, reinforcement, pre-stressing, and substructure elements.
- Embankment protection design to ensure long-term durability.
- Detailed drawings, structural calculation reports, and bills of quantities for accurate planning and construction.
