NEOM Village Power Plant: Reliable Energy for a Growing Community

Energy | Power & Renewables | Neom, KSA

The NEOM Village Power Plant, developed as an independent island-type facility, guarantees reliable electricity for NEOM’s early-stage developments. Designed to operate continuously under highly variable load conditions, the plant ensured uninterrupted power during a critical phase of construction and community growth.

Commissioned by NEOM, K&A delivered the full design scope, covering master planning, concept, detailed design, and geotechnical investigations. We were also in charge of hydrology and drainage, power and distribution systems, smart street lighting, telecom and security networks, and landscape works.

Balancing Short-Term Needs with Long-Term Flexibility

The project needed a plant that could meet strict reliability standards. This was important despite its anticipated short operational life. There was also the potential for future integration into the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) grid. The presence of non-coincident and fluctuating daily loads added complexity to the project. This required a power system that could adapt dynamically to user demand. Additionally, the system needed to maintain cost-effectiveness.

Engineering Flexible Power Systems

K&A implemented island-mode reliability requirements to ensure continuous 24/7 baseload operation. Detailed assessments of daily demand and occupancy patterns guided unit sizing. Additionally, our teams selected a 13.8 kV alternator output voltage to optimize efficiency and facilitate seamless integration. We also introduced a black-start diesel system for rapid recovery of critical loads. The system uses defined spinning reserves and spare capacity to ensure uninterrupted operation.

Powering NEOM’s Early Development

NEOM Village Power Plant delivered a flexible and reliable energy system tailored to the unique conditions of an island-mode plant. The plant has six 3,450 kW units, providing redundancy. This setup achieves a balance between short-term reliability and long-term adaptability. It ensures energy security for NEOM during its early development.

The project illustrated how innovative power plant design can enhance large-scale development. It integrates resilience, efficiency, and compatibility with future grid systems.
