Riyadh Dams Studies Project: Water Management Planning
The Riyadh Dams Studies Project aims to support sustainable water management across the Riyadh Governorate. The study evaluated 150 proposed dam sites to improve water supply, groundwater recharge, irrigation, and flood control.
K&A conducted detailed fieldwork, hydrological modeling, geological assessments, and data-driven analyses using Water Infrastructure Engineering and GIS capabilities.
Scope and Objectives of the Riyadh Dams Studies Project
The Riyadh Dams Studies Project included hydrological, geological, and hydrogeological studies for all targeted sites. The work assessed water demand, reservoir yield, site characteristics, and long-term environmental performance. Advanced tools, including satellite imagery, hydrologic modeling, and statistical methods, helped optimize site selection and prioritization.
Developing a Comprehensive Framework for Dam Planning
The project involved evaluating 150 sites across the region, necessitating extensive field surveys and remote analysis. Each site was reviewed for hydrological behavior, geological conditions, water availability, and environmental impact.
K&A created a multi-criteria methodology that combined hydrology, geology, water demand, reservoir potential, and cost factors. This ensured reliable and efficient prioritization.
Technical Delivery for the Riyadh Dams Studies Project
K&A conducted a hydrological, geological, and environmental assessment that included rainfall-based flood analysis, sediment studies, water budgeting, and groundwater evaluations. These evaluations supported precise estimates of reservoir volume and long-term sustainability objectives. K&A performed rainfall-based flood analysis, sediment studies, water budgeting, and groundwater evaluations. These assessments supported accurate reservoir volume estimates and long-term sustainability goals.
Using Advanced GIS and Modeling Tools
The project leveraged GIS, satellite imagery, and hydrologic modeling to enhance precision and reduce study duration. Statistical tools supported objective decision-making across all sites.
Strengthening Riyadh’s Water Security and Resilience
The final outputs included a strategic roadmap for sustainable water infrastructure, prioritizing a construction list of 150 dams optimized for impact, cost-effectiveness, and environmental sustainability. The recommendations support improved water management, flood control, and irrigation planning.
The project enhances Riyadh’s resilience and provides a replicable framework for future dam planning across Saudi Arabia.
