Route 30 – Fahaheel Expressway: Expanding Capacity in Kuwait’s Urban Core
The upgrading of Route 30, Kuwait’s Fahaheel Expressway, is a flagship initiative by the Public Authority for Roads and Transportation (PART). Spanning 40 kilometers through four governorates, the corridor connects Kuwait City with the satellite cities of Ahmadi, Fahaheel, Fintas, and others.
As one of Kuwait’s busiest routes, Route 30 carries hundreds of thousands of commuters daily. The upgrade is central to transforming satellite cities into modern transportation hubs while relieving chronic congestion and preparing for future growth.
K&A, in association with the Kuwait Technical Consulting Bureau (KTCB), is serving as main consultant. Our scope includes feasibility studies, concept design, and utility diversion planning, supported by expertise in engineering, structural design, environmental assessment, geotechnical analysis, and traffic solutions.
Balancing Mobility and Urban Constraints
The project faced complex urban and technical challenges. Severe congestion demanded solutions that could improve flows by over 30% without disrupting daily life. Limited right-of-way in densely developed districts required careful alignment strategies. The team had to manage large-scale diversions of water, electricity, and telecommunications across multiple governorates.
A Multidisciplinary Design Approach
K&A used a clear strategy that mixed technical skills with input from stakeholders. We carried out a detailed feasibility study, comparing it to international best practices, to create solutions suited for Kuwait. Our team designed interchange ideas to reduce traffic jams and improve safety. We also planned for utility relocations in our construction schedule to limit disruptions to services.
Additional services like value engineering, GIS, BIM, hydrology, smart transportation systems, and lighting design supported the project’s technical aspects. This project fits with Kuwait’s national transportation master plan, ensuring that the upgrade of Route 30 helps achieve larger infrastructure goals.
A Safer and More Connected Expressway
The upgraded Fahaheel Expressway (Route 30) will reduce travel times by up to 40% during peak hours while accommodating tens of thousands of additional vehicles daily. It will also enhance mobility, improve safety, and strengthen connectivity between Kuwait City and its satellite cities. It establishes the framework for an integrated transport network balancing mobility with community needs and supporting Kuwait’s long-term urban growth.
