Wadi Al-Adira Rehabilitation and Restoration: Environmental Renewal
The Wadi Al-Adira rehabilitation and restoration project addresses urgent environmental, hydrological, and urban challenges across 50 km of the Wadi in Hail. The study evaluates existing conditions and proposes measures to restore ecological balance, reduce flood risks, and enhance environmental quality.
K&A led the project’s Feasibility Study and Design, delivering integrated environmental, hydrological, and landscape strategies to guide long-term rehabilitation.
Understanding the Context of the Wadi Al-Adira Rehabilitation and Restoration Project
The Wadi Al-Adira Rehabilitation and Restoration project focuses on a portion of a 130 km natural drainage system that passes through rapidly urbanizing areas. Groundwater rise, leaking utilities, and urban encroachments have created wetlands, reed overgrowth, stagnant water pockets, and degraded habitats.
Despite these pressures, the Wadi remains an important ecological corridor, supporting migratory birds, groundwater recharge, and natural water purification.
Designing a Sustainable and Resilient Environmental Framework
The project focused on restoring ecosystems while addressing the challenges posed by urban pressures. It required solutions to tackle hydrological disruptions, ecological deterioration, and public health concerns. Over 18 km, urban encroachment disrupted natural water flows and heightened flood vulnerability.
Rehabilitating Wetlands and Improving Environmental Quality
K&A analyzed water sources, vegetation patterns, and environmental conditions to guide restoration. This included reducing reed overgrowth, improving water circulation, and addressing stagnant pockets to enhance ecological and visual quality.
Technical Delivery for the Wadi Al-Adira Rehabilitation and Restoration Project
K&A conducted in-depth integrated studies of the environment, hydrology, and urban systems, focusing on key areas such as hydrology, ecology, groundwater behavior, and environmental degradation. They developed strategies to enhance water quality while promoting biodiversity. Furthermore, K&A implemented effective measures to manage flood risks.
Advanced Modeling and Infrastructure Upgrades
The team used 3D geological and aquifer modeling, groundwater simulations, and surface–subsurface interaction studies to understand long-term hydrological behavior. Recommendations were made to upgrade leaking utility networks and prevent further environmental decline.
A Path Toward a Restored and Sustainable Wadi
The project aims to transform Wadi Al-Adira into a Resilient Environmental Corridor. It provides a long-term roadmap for reviving wetlands. The focus is on protecting biodiversity and enhancing urban environmental quality. Additionally, it highlights recreational and landscaping opportunities. These opportunities could turn the Wadi into a vibrant public destination.
Through the efforts of the Wadi Al-Adira Rehabilitation and Restoration Project, flood protection has been strengthened, groundwater management improved, and environmental resilience for local communities significantly enhanced. These outcomes will contribute to a safer and more sustainable future for the region.
