Yaba Road and Pedestrian Bridges Lagos: Integrated Urban Connectivity
The Yaba Road and Pedestrian Bridges Lagos project strengthens mobility in one of the city’s most active districts, supporting safe travel for residents, students, and businesses. As Lagos continues to expand, improving road and pedestrian links has become essential to ease congestion and create smoother, safer access across urban corridors.
K&A served as the main consultant for the full design, delivering coordinated road, bridge, and structural design solutions that enhance mobility, safety, and long-term performance.
Expanding Movement Across Yaba’s Busy Urban Corridor
Craneburg Construction Company appointed K&A to design two road bridges measuring 150 m and 200 m, along with two symmetrical pedestrian bridges of approximately 40 m each.
The design ensures continuity along an important transport link serving schools, commercial hubs, residential areas, and bustling local markets. All roadway geometry, bridge components, drainage requirements, and pedestrian safety features were developed to support efficient and reliable circulation.
The Yaba Road and Pedestrian Bridges Lagos project reflects the city’s commitment to improving transport capacity while ensuring safe access for both vehicles and pedestrians.
Key Design Considerations and Urban Challenges
Working Within a Constrained Urban Environment
The project required precise road alignment within a dense built-up area. Limited right-of-way demanded careful planning of bridge placement, approach tie-ins, and lane continuity.
Ensuring Pedestrian Safety and Access
The pedestrian bridges needed to accommodate high foot traffic generated by nearby schools, markets, and public transport stops. Clearances, approach ramps, and visibility were essential to support safe and accessible use.
Coordinating Multiple Structural Elements
The team managed the integration of foundations, decks, bearings, piers, and abutments to deliver a durable and well-balanced structural system suited for existing urban constraints.
Integrated Road and Bridge Design Solutions
K&A developed a complete and coordinated design package that supports both current and future mobility needs. The key elements include:
- Comprehensive road and bridge design, ensuring proper alignment, safe geometry, and smooth transitions between existing and new sections.
- Full structural design, covering foundations, decks, reinforcement, approach ramps, and supporting elements.
- Drainage, lighting, and pedestrian safety upgrades, reducing flooding risks and improving visibility and access.
- Detailed construction documentation, including drawings, structural calculations, and bills of quantities, enabling accurate planning and execution.
Together, these elements create a reliable and efficient link that supports long-term movement and reduces conflicts along the corridor.
Mobility and Safety Improvements for Yaba Road and Pedestrian Bridges Lagos
The project delivers long-term benefits for one of Lagos’ busiest districts:
- Increased road capacity through the delivery of two new bridge structures.
- Improved traffic flow and reduced conflict points along the corridor.
- Safer conditions for pedestrians with dedicated bridge crossings and upgraded lighting.
- More efficient and integrated mobility supporting businesses, schools, and residents in Yaba’s fast-growing urban center.
Completed design in 2023, the project demonstrates K&A’s capability in shaping urban mobility solutions that support community needs and long-term city development.
