GeoAI for Water Forecasting in Bahrain: Intelligent Planning for a Secure Future

Digital Services | GSI | Manama, Bahrain

Bahrain’s Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) commissioned K&A to support the development of a national water master plan for 2024–2032, the GeoAI water forecasting Bahrain project. The project addresses growing concerns over water security by adopting intelligent forecasting methods that move beyond static models.

K&A’s Water & Environment sector worked closely with our Digital Services team to apply GeoAI technology. This innovative approach combines artificial intelligence, remote sensing, and geospatial analysis to deliver a future-proof system for forecasting water demand.

Building a Smarter Water Master Plan

Conventional methods of demand forecasting lacked the accuracy needed to manage Bahrain’s fast-changing urban landscape. Key limitations included the absence of a high-resolution population model and difficulty aligning sector-specific needs with national water strategy goals.

K&A responded with an integrated GeoAI solution that supports residential, commercial, and industrial planning, while aligning with Bahrain’s targets for reducing non-revenue water and improving consumption efficiency.

Innovation Through GeoAI

K&A introduced a first-of-its-kind spatial methodology for Bahrain:

  • Creation of a 50×50-meter population grid using satellite and nightlight imagery
  • Machine learning models trained to capture the real spatial distribution
  • Disaggregation by sector and non-revenue water
  • Integration of historical consumption, infrastructure expansion, and national development goals
  • A model that continuously adapts to policy, land use, and population changes

The system was delivered in two phases: developing the population grid, then overlaying demand data to build a dynamic forecasting model for 2024–2032. Interactive dashboards and GIS platforms enabled real-time adjustments and client engagement.

Ensuring Accuracy and Transparency

Even in a fully digital project, quality control was critical. K&A ensured data validation through structured review sessions with EWA, alignment with national KPIs, and continuous monitoring of AI outputs. All assumptions and methodologies were documented to ensure replicability and long-term transparency.

Results: A New Standard in Water Forecasting

The GeoAI for National Water Forecasting in Bahrain delivered clear, actionable insights:

  • Forecasted water demand shows a 15% increase by 2032, correcting previous
  • High-investment zones identified for targeted infrastructure
  • Areas with declining demand mapped to support resource
  • Grid-level resolution enables block-by-block demand
  • Reduced dependence on manual surveys, cutting costs and improving
  • A live, adaptive model aligned with Bahrain’s national wate

Shaping Regional Water Security

This project sets a new benchmark for national utility planning in the GCC. By integrating artificial intelligence with geospatial data, Bahrain now has a live, learning system that enhances decision-making and infrastructure resilience.

K&A continues to support governments and utilities with digital transformation tools that combine technical precision, innovation, and long-term sustainability.
