K&A Opens Project Sites to University Students

Cities and infrastructure are shaped not only by today’s engineers, but by the next generation learning how to build them. At Khatib & Alami (K&A), opening active project site visits to engineering students has become a key part of the effort to bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world practice.

Across the region, students are stepping beyond the classroom and into live construction environments, gaining firsthand insight into how complex projects are delivered.

From Classroom to Construction Site

K&A welcomed students from the Notre Dame University–Louaize (NDU) ASCE Student Chapter to the MEA Staff Services and Recreational Building site in Beirut.

Students observed structural systems, construction methods, and site activities, gaining insight into project planning and multidisciplinary coordination. This project, part of the MEA Campus Master Plan Upgrade, spans a 4,361 m² site with approximately 22,000 m² of built-up area, with K&A providing design and supervision services.

In Baghdad, K&A hosted professors and students from the American University in Baghdad at the Al Sarafiya Steel Bridge Project.

The session focused on steel bridge construction, including planning workflows, site coordination, and supervision practices. As part of a wider program to improve mobility, the project offered valuable insight into infrastructure delivery and its role in enhancing connectivity.

Building Skills Through Experience

Across both site visits, engineering students gained a clearer understanding of how projects are delivered, from design and coordination to on-site decision-making. Seeing these processes in action helps translate theory into practice and highlights the complexity behind engineering delivery.

These initiatives reflect K&A’s commitment to knowledge sharing and capacity building. By connecting students with active project environments, the firm supports the development of future professionals and strengthens collaboration between academia and industry.

As projects continue to grow in scale and complexity, early exposure to real-world environments is key to preparing the next generation of engineers.
