Iraq’s Infrastructure Advances with Key Projects in Basra

Khatib & Alami (K&A) participated in the launch of two major projects contributing to Iraq’s infrastructure development in Basra Governorate: the Basra Ring Road and the Umm Qasr Desalination Plant. Together, these projects support Iraq’s efforts to strengthen transportation networks, enhance water security, and advance long-term development priorities across southern Iraq.

Basra Ring Road Advances Urban Mobility & Connectivity

K&A is supporting the delivery of the 89-kilometer Basra Ring Road, a strategic infrastructure project that will enhance urban mobility, reduce congestion, and strengthen connectivity between Basra’s urban center, industrial zones, and major ports.

As part of Iraq’s Development Road initiative, the project will connect Al-Faw Grand Port to the Turkish border, supporting the country’s vision for enhanced regional trade and connectivity. Once complete, the road will improve the movement of people and goods while creating opportunities for economic, urban, and industrial growth across the region.

Umm Qasr Desalination Strengthens Water Security in Iraq

The Umm Qasr Desalination Plant treats local artesian well water through a two-stage process with a total capacity of 1,000 cubic meters per hour. The facility provides a reliable source of potable drinking water for local communities and helps address long-standing water scarcity challenges.

As part of Iraq’s largest desalination initiative, the project is designed to strengthen regional water security by meeting growing demand for safe and dependable water supplies. Once fully operational, the wider program is expected to deliver up to one million cubic meters of potable water per day, supporting southern Iraq’s infrastructure development in terms of sustainability and improving quality of life.

Supporting Iraq’s Infrastructure Development Priorities

The Basra Ring Road and the Umm Qasr Desalination Plant reflect Iraq’s continued investment in Iraq’s infrastructure development that addresses critical mobility and water security needs while supporting long-term development priorities.

Through its involvement in both projects, K&A is contributing to infrastructure that improves connectivity, expands access to essential services, and supports sustainable economic growth. Drawing on multidisciplinary expertise, the firm helps deliver solutions that combine technical rigor with a focus on long-term value for communities and future generations.

Together, these projects demonstrate how integrated transportation and water infrastructure can support economic activity, strengthen resilience, and improve quality of life. K&A remains committed to delivering infrastructure that enables progress and creates lasting value across Iraq.
